Arjun Singh says that by increasing the reservations in private sector, colleges; there will an uplift in the condition of OBC/SC/ST. So why dont these politicians & MPs increase the no. of seats to 49% in parliament also. if that way their conditon is going to improve then this way also their condition will improve. So if they are going to reserve the seats in colleges then they must reserve the seats in parliament also...

just a point for you to ponder on.

if you scheck your fact correctly, all the states in south india, including maharashtra and gujrat, have had reservations for OBCs, some over 50%. there has been no fall in standard.

why is there such a hue and cry in north india. do north indians consider themselves a separate country???

think rationally, don't let centuries old upper caste prejudices cover your senses.

if a normal person and a lame guty have to compete together in a race then it is unfair to make them run in the same condition. the normal person will be given a few hurdles to off set the handicap of the other guy.

centuries old caste prejudice continue to rule our society. it will take a long time to go away. so reservations are a must.

Hi thee v r students of KIMS KArad, MAharashtra. We have sent a letter 2 d president which is given below. Plz continue d protest n contact us at youthforequality@yahoo.com. Thanx

To,
The President of India,
Rashtrapati Bhavan,
New Delhi.

Subject : Protest against the proposed reservation policy.

Respected Sir,
The current proposal for increase in reservations in educational institutes and the private sector as announced by The Hon. Human Resource Development Minister came as a rude shock to the entire student community; more shocking was the use of tear gas, water cannons and lathis on the students protesting in a non violent way.
We, as medical students would like to register our protest through this letter.

The suppression of certain sectors of the community on the basis of rigid caste system for thousands of years has been a very shameful part of our history. Hence, the introduction of economic concessions, reservations and other privileges for the upliftment of these downtrodden sections, post independence for 10 years was essential and commendable.
However, even half a century later, though the social backdrop of our country has changed radically, the status of these reservations has still remained the same.
In the current social situation prevalent in our country, suppression of an individual on the basis of caste is no longer relevant. Opportunities for development depend on availability of economic resources and other such factors, but not merely on caste alone. And so now we feel, that the purpose for which these reservations were introduced is not served as---
1) the truly deserving and underprivileged sections of the society cannot avail of these facilities, as at times they do not even obtain the requisite primary education.
2) it has been observed that these reservations are availed mostly by individuals who are economically self- sufficient and who get opportunities equivalent to that of people belonging to open category.
For instance, an individual belonging to the so called backward caste, makes use of all the privileges, reservations and economic concessions at all levels of education; beginning from primary education, throughout school, junior college, entry into professional college, graduation and even post graduation. This does not end even here. The same individual is given preference for a government job, sometimes even relaxing the upper age limit for candidature, he has much more chances of being promoted to higher posts in a shorter span of time. Eventually that individual, at the time of retirement, is a Class I officer, gets a hefty pension and attains a level of substantial social and economic well being. So is it really justified that in such situations, his offsprings avail the same facilities in the garb of being “socially backward” ?

Also, for availing these reservations, provided for the socially disadvantaged, many people resort to malpractices like obtaining bogus caste certificates.
Talking specifically of professional education, first and foremost, the eligibility criteria for gaining admission into professional colleges is lowered, not to mention the specific number of seats reserved for students belonging to certain castes. They are given all sorts of encouraging incentives like fee waivers, various scholarships, allowances for books, accommodation etc.
Even after all this, as statistics reveal, many of these students are not able to cope up with the mounting academic pressure, which eventually leads to a higher drop out rate. This has two major setbacks:
1) loss of government investment on each student.
2) loss of a valuable seat.
Intelligence, capabilities and competence are not limited to any social strata or caste. Then why are we reserving seats in our premier educational institutions like IITs , IIMs ,AIIMS, other professional colleges etc and shunting aside some really talented and deserving candidates just because they do not belong to a certain caste?
India is being unfair to its own students.
Providing reservations and lowering merit is as good as underestimating the capabilities of the people in question. By lowering standards of these students, we are not allowing their full potential to emerge, which is hampering their chance for development, and in the end , our country loses out on the best minds.
According to our Constitution, India is a secular country which does not differentiate amongst its citizens on the basis of caste and socio economic background. So why should education be an exception to this rule?
Because of these reservations, we are teaching students to discriminate among their peers on the basis of caste. This will go a long way in sowing the seeds of hatred and communal intolerance in the minds of young, impressionable students.
Reservations at all levels of education lead to the limitation of total number of seats available to students of open category. This leads to more and more professionals seeking out for better educational opportunities abroad which give respect to their merit. This is one of the leading causes of “Brain Drain” from our country.
The current opinion about the new reservation policy is that it is extremely politically motivated in view of the upcoming assembly elections.

Instead of mere complaining, we as students would like to suggest a few things which would make a difference.
1) Instead of generalized application of reservations, for an indefinite period of time, we suggest that they should be restricted to a predetermined stipulated period of time, say for one generation.
2) Reservations if needed should be strictly restricted to economically underprivileged students irrespective of the caste system.

3) The objective of reservations is the social upliftment of underprivileged students. Once an individual reaches graduation with state support he is made competent enough to fend for himself further on.
So, we strongly recommend application of reservations maximum upto the level of graduation but definitely not further on. Instead more emphasis should be laid at the grass root levels i.e. primary and secondary school education to strengthen educational prospects of these socially disadvantaged students.
4) Let there be no bias whatsoever at the topmost levels of education and future job prospects, not only in the private but also in the Government sector. In order to survive the global competition we have to recruit our fittest and brightest at the top irrespective of the social strata.
5) We cannot afford dilution of merit by lowering eligibility criteria for admission into professional courses.
6) We also wholeheartedly support the view of increasing the number of seats in the open category.

Sir, as an eminent researcher, an intellectual and a believer in quality education ,we plead to you to look into this matter, as the future of the millions of youth of India lies in the hands of a few political movers and shakers at this moment.
We hope we will not be let down.

Yours sincerely,
The Students,

1) I think that the whole issue of reservation is very much against the constitution which promise equallity for all.If the backward classes say that they were not treated as equals then do we need to go back and repeat what was done

this is getting heated up.. i have been reading comments against the reservation but here i have seen some for it.. i personally am against any kind of reservations. but if there are some people think that hey had been looked down upo for past so many centuries, then they should be given a chance. but not at the cost of the career of an another person.. i am all for economic subsidies in education but not for the number of seats. make primary and higher education free for them, but in competitive exams, there should be no reservations. a person who clears an exam, should get the seat... simple or not so simple. i have been reading a lot but www.merinews.com has covered it really well. do visit n leave ur comments.

it's remarkable and strange how so many educated people fail to realize that a change in the "attitude of people" as regards the so-called "lower castes" will never be affected by reserving seats for the OBCs and SC/STs.

what needs to change is an attitude, which can never be influenced by the bookish nature of curriculum in our country. in fact, providing someone with an easier way out further increases the estrangement of the two groups of people on either side of the "caste divide".

do these people advocating reservations really believe that studying medicine or learning geography or mechanical engineering, someone who was looked upon as a "low caste fellow" will suddenly become the toast of the town? well, no! the reason is simple: providing college education doesn't change attitudes.

it's the same reason why so many so-called "upper caste" families also indulge in heinous acts such as female infanticide, prenatal sex determination and so on.

the point i am making is that education has nothing to do with attitudes.

hence, reservations are going to do nothing for improving the status of "lower castes" in society. what will improve their status is equality - which will only come out of providing deserving people with help (which no one is opposed to) and letting the rest come up by their own merit.

this will instil a sense of respect for the "low castes" in the minds of the "upper castes" and thus go a long way in terminating this embarassing, inhuman and demeaning caste system.

I think we should have job reservations in all the fields. I completely
support the PM and all the politicians for promoting this. Let's start the
reservation with our cricket team. We should have 10 percent reservation for
muslims. 30 percent for OBC, SC/ST like that. Cricket rules should be
modified accordingly. The boundary circle should be reduced for an SC/ST
player. The four hit by an OBC player should be considered as a six and a
six hit by a OBC player should be counted as 8 runs. An OBC player scoring
60 runs should be declared as a century.

We should influence ICC and make rules so that the pace bowlers like Shoaib
Akhtar should not bowl fast balls to our OBC player. Bowlers should bowl
maximum speed of 80 kilometer per hour to an OBC player. Any delivery above
this speed should be made illegal.

Also we should have reservation in Olympics. In the 100 meters race, an OBC
player should be given a gold medal if he runs 80 meters.

There can be reservation in Government jobs also. Let's recruit SC/ST and
OBC pilots for aircrafts which are carrying the ministers and
politicians (that can really help the country.. )

Ensure that only SC/ST and OBC doctors do the operations for the ministers
and other politicians. (Another way of saving the country..)

Let's be creative and think of ways and means to guide INDIA forward...
Let's show the world that INDIA is a GREAT country. Let's be proud of being
an INDIAN..

Reservation is definitely the way to "divide... and conquer" for the vote-bank minded politicians. They do not know that merit is required in Medicine for the cream to rise to the top, otherwise mediocrity shall remain the name of the game.
I whole-heartedly support the current agitation. It would be shameful that AIIMS shall have only 19 as compared to 34 seats previously for general category out of total of 50 seats per year.
We shall fight, and we shall win! Let the flame keep flying high, coz excellence is our motto....

I openly ask a few questions to the politicians and those who support the concept of 'reservations'...:
Q1.During the last 50 yrs seats were reserved for these economically and socially backward classes. So kindly enumerate the benefits that have resulted in the so called upliftment of the STs,SCs and OBCs in the past century??

Q2.If the very aim of this attempt is to remove social disparity, then dont you think that a seat for which a general catagory student works so hard to attain when is being presented to a backward class catagory student as a gift wrapped in the cover of 'reservation',would increase love, tolerance and respect for the OBCs,STs,SCs in the society?Do u really think it will??

Q3.IITs and AIIMS and the like result into doctors and engineers for the benefit of the country and development.IF we are ignoring merit here itself then what do we expect for the future of India?

Q4.Even after so many arguments if you still think reservaions are needed in the country then why are you aiming at the post graduate courses especially professional courses directly like this?DO you think that till the elementary level and graduate courses, the SCs, STs and OBCs have got their right to the fullest that now they need just one more...JUST ONE more step to be completely uplifted??How intelligent!!

We are compiling a database of YFE protesters all over India. Do you have email ids/phone nos. of the prominent members in the other cities that you have mentioned here?

We are also working on a memorandum and a 5-6 page document that explains the YFE thinking and reasoning in detail so that it can be sent off to all colleges.

It would be great to have an all-India database of YFE support. Please see if you can arrange to get something like this.

The govt. gives incentives for family planning. All reserved cats and so called leaders say that their population has increased to 70%and thats why they shud get more seats .We the open obeying all the policies of govt. got reduced to 30% then is it our fault.Instead of giving incentives ,they are punishing us and rewarding them by giving them more seats.I am not able to their logic behind this. Similarly they give all credit to coaching institutes for our success.Do all who join coaching institutes do they succeed. No credit to their hard work?I challenge openly to this.No coaching institute can give u a seat unless u study hard.Secondly have u tried to find out if all the students who join coaching classes are only from open category? i am proud of the uproar you guys have created and m dyin to help you out but how do i do that?i live in gujarat and dont really have many sources or merely the info as to correspond with you all.i read some of the comments stated here which were AGAINST your protest and to all these SMARTMOUTHS i just wanna say- what do you know?in todays world many of the obc's and sc's are pretty rich and successful.moreover the general category mostly includes the not so rich class of people.why the hell should an obc guy scorin around 80 to 75% get admisson even when a general category person has scored 90%.anyone who supports this shit is not ;lookin at reality bcoz our obc and sc country people need reservation only at school level.for higher studies there is always scholarships.private schools now a days take entrance tests for three year olds and that is unfair.so why dont our dear ministers do somethin bout that.can you even imagine a poor person affording the iim fees.and now that this hads been implemented it turns out that the general category is the one who needs the charity!we cant let our own rights be neglected so that our dumb ministers can get votes!!!!!!!!!!!!11

youth for equality, my advice to you is please stop being so nice in your protests and make some smart moves.our ministers dont give a damn bout anything related to the developement of our country. you need to hit them where it hurts.harass the govt. make them afraid of the fact that their kursi is in trouble. ask rather demand for resignations and get yourselves a representative who will make your voice hear in their deaf and udmb ears and brains. ask people to help you in jammin the traffic. open free charity hospitals for the poor and have the govt. hospitals close down.keep itching powder with you while marching so that as soon as the police attacks spray it on them. keep water baloons with you and shoot the police with it if they interfere!go into these political rallies and start laughin loudly at whatever they say.plus go and play loud m,usic in the middle of the night outside arjun the gunda's house. harass them fightr fire with ice by makin their lives a living hell bcoz they dont care bout any of us. go to the president of india for support.bcoz f the govt. suceeds then india vision 2020 will be a far fetched dream! youth for equality!
time for another independence struggle!
