Close to a thousand students gathered at LHMC at 9 in the morning to continue their protests against extension of reservations.
After learning that our "Hon'ble(?)" HRD Minister has refused to comment on the issue even after the elections were over, the students decided spontaneously to start a march. The students rushed out of the Gates of LHMC, dodging the police and RAF deployment and blocked the Connaught Place at several places. Then the students proceeded towards the historic India Gate lawns, dodging thousands of policemen and RAF deployed along the route. After Running for about twelve kilometres, the students managed to reach within half a kilometre of the corridors of power (North & South Blocks, & Rashtrapati Bhawan). There we sat down on the historic Rajpath to wait for a reply from the government. But then....

On May 12th, peacefully protesting medical students were manhandled, lathicharged, hit by water cannons and tear gas shells were rained upon them. Even shots were fired in the air.... but none of the YOUTH FOR EQUALITY backed up, they were detained for more than six hours at various police stations and threatened with dire consequences lest we take back our movement. Is this how the government of INDIA treats its future? We request all visitors to this blog to register their protest at this incident by sending mails to the Commissioner of Delhi Police (, and the Prime Minister of India (, and the National Human Rights Commission ( .

Most of us, I believe, agree on the importance of managing public opinion through what is spoken in the media. And to be effective, we all need to speak with one voice. I have put down my two cents on this issue, hoping it helps the cause further.

As I see it, most of us do not actually care about the actual loss to career oppurtunities or the associated money. What pains is the injustice and unfair treatement and in that sense, it is no different from the independence struggle.

So, it also not much about the reduction in quality. Electoral arithmetic has ensured such a policy has come to stay in Tamil Nadu, and I must say, without any perceptible reduction in the quality of service. Though lack of merit as a criteria destroys the competitiveness, corruption, greed and lack of ethics are in no way lesser contributors. And examinations are only an attempt to gauge and individual's capability and a few marks more or less may not matter much.

To me, reservation is a harsh reality and it may be wiser to attempt to get the policy modified than getting it scrapped. Three arguments come to my mind against the reservation policy -

1. Why should Lallu Yadav's son be preferred over any of us ? He is more priviliged than us in every sense - quality of education, financial resources and political power.

2. Why should Lallu Yadav's son be preferred over any poor OBC lacking access to education ? How is this policy meant to help him, the really needy ?

3. Thirdly, none of us denied anybody their oppurtunities. So why should we pay a price for some actions allegedly perpetuated by our forefathers ?

If we succeed in bringing in a creamy layer criteria, I believe we can get the powerful OBCs to get talking about degradation of merit, thereby help in keeping the quota precentage low and prevent it from increasing as it has happened in Tamil Nadu.

Wishing the best

its a pity to watch the conditions under which our indian doctors are being treated by the politicians and the police. I am with the doctors and the students preparing to enter the medical colleges against the extended reservations.Today's lathi charge has been a great setback to our system of governance . The extended reservation can only help those politicians filling their votebanks but it will not go a long way till we stand against their greedy desires and protest against the exploitors of constitution.

In case any under privillaged want to rise in his/her life, he must learn a lesson from refugees from West Pakistan. I am on proud of them. Even though they were not much educated, they rose to the occasion after one time help by the Punjabis on the front, specially RSS men and also to some exent the Government of India. These refugees rose by dint of their hard work of any kind including domestic help, all sort of labor & small jobs e.g pulling rickshaw. Ultimately, as on date they are very very well off. Two of them had been the Prime Ministers of India because of their non-contraversial qualities. How they rose so quickly. Was their any reservation? It was only education through very hard work, through competition. Why can't these under privillaged people of India origin are still demanding reservation after 59 years of freedom. I am 50 year old. When I look back at my class fellows of school time, particularly poor from Schdule Caste community, they could not get any thing out of the so called reservation by the Government.

WHY RESERVATION.... ???????2005 IAS results bust quota myth

Saturday , May 13, 2006

Will the proposed increase in reservations in elite institutes bring merit and socio-economic backwardness on a common ground?

The results for 2005 Civil Services examination seems to break some myths.

In the merit list for Civil Services, 48 candidates from the Scheduled Castes (SCs), Schedules Tribes (STs) and Other Backward Classes have made it through the General Category.

Out of the 210 selected candidates in the General Category, 48 of them belonged to the reserved classes.

These students competed on the basis of merit and did not seek the reservation benefit.

Interestingly, all SC/ST and OBC candidates who cleared the mains in the General Category belong to families who have traditionally taken advantage of the reservation policy to bag government jobs.

Their children seem not to be suffering from any economic or educational backwardness.

Thus it becomes clear that children who were groomed well and were able to receive quality education have made it to the top without using the reservation quota available to them.

These students are making it difficult for those backward class students who are using reservation benefits for the first time.

The 93rd Constitutional Ammendment passed by the parliament reads: Nothing in this article shall prevent the state from making any provision by law, for the advancement of any educationally backward classes of citizens or for the Scheduled Castes or Scheduled Tribes insofar as such special provisions relate to their admission to educational institutions, including private educational institutions, whether aided or unaided by the state, other than minority educational institutions referred to in Clause (1) of Article (30). It's amply clear that the ammendment mandates reservations for the educationally backward and not for socially backward classes. I'd like you to make a mental note of this fact. This my friend, is the legal loophole we were praying for. Any affirmative action by the Government of India that deviates from the spirit of the above law, can be challenged in the Supreme Court. And my gutfeel is as always, the Supreme Court will bail us out.

Argument-1: Tamil Nadu has had a 69% quota regime for years. How come there’s been no of whimper of protest there? How come people have accepted it? Well, what do you do when all the political parties gang up against you and pass a law that makes a mockery of meritocracy? You approach the courts. What do you do when the court verdict is treated with contempt by the same political parties? You realise protesting is futile and you focus on joining institutions that give you an equal chance. That’s what happened in Tamil Nadu. The so-called Forward Castes stopped applying to government colleges and started getting into self-financed colleges and meritorious institutions like the IITs, IIMs, AIIMs, NIFT, etc. So it was more a case of resigned acceptance. The moment you extend this quota regime to self-financed colleges and premier institutions, you break the last straw of hope for the remaining 31% of Tamil Nadu

At 11:47 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Argument-2: To say that the quota regime produces mediocrity is ridiculous. Look at South India where mandal is in operation. It has some of the finest hospitals and doctors in India. Oh yeah? That’s like the rooster taking credit for the dawn. Nothing could be farther from the truth. South India has a very fine medical reputation only because of its private hospitals. None of these hospitals hire doctors using the quota principle. On the contrary, they go purely by merit. I wonder if that’s the reason why people who mouth such arguments choose private hospitals over the mandalised government hospitals.

At 11:55 AM, Blogger doc_india said...

The protests and their deplorable handling in Mumbai will help in spreading this movement.
However the momentum gathered has to be built up upon.
Monday needs to see a even bigger build-up.
Also remember no political party has the guts to come out in our support-yet.
We just have to make them realize that they will end up antagonizing about 300 million Indians. The only way to do that will be to make this into a mass movement-that makes Mandal look like a picnic.
Where are the other University students? Why only medicos?Or is it that the other people have yet again put up their hands and accepted this as fate?
Come on everyone-this is the new India-we have had enough of this "Chalta hai" attitude-lets show them what we can do.
After all India has made whatever progress it has-and inspite of this political calss-not becoz of them

Just forwaring an email that I received from one of my very dear friends... Lets make a difference this time...

I apologize for using addresses from a lot of mailing lists from forwarded mails I have received over the past few days. But this is a matter that probably concerns all of us. If your blood does not boil by the footage seen on news-channels of how interns were treated in Mumbai, then probably nothing will move you into action.

Please add your comments to the issues raised here and forward to all your friends, colleagues and associates whom you consider are desirous of a better future for our generations. Please forward to the youth of India who matter. Please forward the corridors of power who are deaf, but maybe they will read.

Please forward a copy back to me so that I can maintain a dataset of all the youth and organize any mail campaign to reach out to individuals who might help to change the face of the nation.

Apathy or Inability – welcome to the Democrazy!

The facts: Seven hundred medical students, disturbed by certain issues, express their desire to meet the first citizen of the country, proceed peacefully towards the Prime Minister’s office, are manhandled, tear gassed and brutally assaulted by the law enforcers of the city. Some are detained in police stations, and some land up in emergency room of hospitals seeking treatment for injuries. The PMO choses to remain silent. The residents and the students join hands and declare strike. The media takes the issue in a luke-warm fashion and plays the devil’s advocate, projecting the striking doctors as the root cause of the patients’ suffering. Peacefully protesting doctors in Mumbai were brutally lathicharged infront of the Governor’s house. Some media channels highlighted the atrocities. The Police officials accused the students of damaging property and dismissed the issue as minor commotion. Friends, welcome to Democrazy!

Are medical students of the top five medical colleges of the country, arguably some of the best brains that the country has in the current generation? Is it justified to treat them as common men? If yes, then like everyone demands their rights and voices their opinion in form of strikes, violence and hooliganism, so they are justified in their desire to make their voice heard. If no, then was the brutal handling of the youth justified? Please consider they are not even full grown adults. A medical student is only 17 when he joins college. What message do you convey to these children when you assault them brutally, tear gas them or hit them with water canons? And for what objective?

Is our Prime Minister so unapproachable to the best minds of the nation for an issue which concerns them? How does the current government then try to identify with the masses of the nation? Is our political think tank so far away from the common man that to meet the PM our students need to face physical and mental humiliation? If the medical students are not our masses, then who is the common man?

More than 24 hours have passed after the students tried to meet the PM and were chased and beaten away. Yet the PM remains silent. No statement has been issued by the PM office regarding the issue raised or the sad turn of events. Is our Prime Minister, incapable, apathetic, indifferent or a mute spectator? Does he await orders from other sources, (divine intervention) to open his mouth and speak? Like the HRD minister, the PMO would probably offer an apology for the misbehavior meted out to the students at the hands of the law enforcing agencies when the office opens on Monday. Has this become a mockery? First you slap an individual and then two days later, sweetly apologize and then request to forget and forgive. The doctors are expected to attend to emergencies on weekends, but the PMO has no emergencies. It remains silent over the weekend. Of course it is probably a matter too trivial to respond on. Or is the PM waiting for directives on what he has to say. It is also possible that the speechwriter has taken ill and is not finding any doctor who will attend to him. The HRD Minister had comfortably said that he was unaware that students wanted to meet him, and expressed his sorrow that police had mistreated them. A similar answer could be expected from the PM and the Governor of Mumbai. If their information system is so defunct that they don’t get a message from outside their gates for 24 hours, what are they sitting in office for and how are they managing the entire country?

The media focuses attention on suffering patients outside hospitals. The core issue has largely been cold-shouldered. The double standards adopted by the media are clearly evident, and they wait to capture the most emotional story to catch the prime slot for maximum viewership. God forbid if there is mortality outside the hospital, be sure that you will catch the eventuality on the news channels with the sensationalization even before the calamity has actually occurred.

The patient suffering seems to be the sole responsibility of the doctors who are on strike. They have moral, physical and emotional responsibility of all the suffering caused. The silence from the PM office is shattering. There is not even a word from the Prime Minister. Is he following what has long been our foreign policy, ‘watching the situation closely’? Or is this something right out of our gynecology textbooks, ‘watchful expectancy’? This is sheer mockery of the highest office in the country.

Is the faculty of medical colleges and hospitals, merely supportive or is willing to become an active participant in the whole issue? Where are the nurses, and the hospital attendants? What is their role in the issue and are they supportive or participant? The pool officers, research staff and the residents of Hospital administration, are you not doctors? Do you not wish to favor or support the reservation agitation? Why is there such deafening silence from the IITs, IIMs and other intelligentsia of the country? Does the reservation issue not affect you or bother you? United we stand divided we fall.

We are creating all the fuss when the certificate for your reserved status can be obtained in INR 1000 from any government office in Chandigarh as the news channels reported. Why don’t we all approach such agents and get ourselves the certificate and thereby become eligible for the reserved quota?

We are a society that is sitting on a live fuse. Angry scuffles have become common following minor road accidents and have given birth to the phenomenon of ‘Road Rage’. It will not be a surprise if ‘Rang de Basanti’ does not remain a mere movie to be watched in theaters, and the PMO has a serious situation to deal with if the current one is not serious enough to provoke comment.

Here is something we all need to do. The system of quota needs to be dealt with a social backlash. How bout letting the world know that an engineer or a doctor got into a college with just 45% marks.
Here is what I am proposing; everyone who got into a college without using quota should wear a blue ribbon on his left hand. This way we can show the world we got into a college cause we were qualified not because we had some certificate saying we need reservation. What do you guys think?

Youth for equality
Iam here to express my pledge and solidarity for the anti reservation movement because I sincerely believe from the core of my heart that time has come when no one should be allowed to go free with a murder, in this case the MERIT. The time has come when hard Qs should be asked why there are no roads,no eletricity,no potable water. Why after 60 yrs of independence the govt. has not been able to provide these basic necessities? Why the buildings crumble after fifteen to twenty years when they are supposed to last for 100 - 200 years? Why the murderers of Jessica Lall go scot-free? The time has come when everyone involved in the cover up should be exposed and punished.
Our thick skinned, shameless politicians have not learnt their lessons from Mandal times or are they deliberately pushing this country into chaos. These politicians knew that reservation will evoke a painful cry from the nation, they knew that people will suffer, they knew that people will die and still they went ahead with reservations. The height of shameful disgrace is that two most learned individuals are at the helm of affairs of the country and they are keeping their mouth shut. The 'devi' of sacrifice is ready to sacrifice the youth of the nation for a few votes.
Indian politicians have no stakes in making indian institutions world class, rather they have vested interests in keeping them average and struggling. They have all the money in the world to send their children and grand children to best institutes in the world and if indian institutions become world class, who will pamper their children when they come back and do not join politics.

60 years of reservation has produced thousands of MLAs and MPs. What have these people done for their community except for filling their coffers? I belong to a reserved constituency and happen to know 4 MLAs bone deep. I can testify that none of their community members have directly benefitted from them. They have the same economic status and have the same pass time as 60 years ago. The MLAs and MPs win their elections on the plank of social service but for the past 60 years, they have failed to bring any social reform or change in the community.
I believe the time has come when all reservations should be stopped and these 'social servants' should be asked to go back to their communities and devise ways to uplift them. The fact of the matter is that the country does not need politicians but social reformers who can restructure their communities.

By virtue of irrational reservation the powerful, effluent group has been produced within the scheduled tribes and the scheduled tribes. Their children have access to the best education in the world, they have all the money in their pockets to buy their children any facility they want and these are the people who corner all benefits and average and lowly sc/ st is left high and dry.
I think this is the moment of do or die, as once this reservation is implemented no one on this earth will have courage to phase it out.

IT proves tht we the 'youth' dnt hv any respect in asspect of our opinions.
jst because of this, there will be no such INDIA on which we should be proud of.there will be no democracy.
we all are wth you.protest is the right way of makng people aware of.
we say the situation has 2 change,bt its the time whrer we have 2 get up, have 2 come2gather 4 our nations nd 4 our bright future.
Now a days we are walking on the path of SUPER POWER NATION, but if we are going 2 have the same proble we will never become d super nation. And we should nt be ashamed of being AN INDIAN.
Most important thing is that we are behaving like the '1857 UTHAAV'.There was a lack of i thnk the striks which are going on nw a days should be on the same day at the same time.
